There was a great deal of back-and-forth in the left half of the blogosphere this weekend over employers who use FICO scores as a way of weeding out job candidates. In a sort of peculiarly American fashion, our nation seems to have decided that one’s credit history is a good proxy for one’s worth as a human being, and thus should be used to determine eligibility for everything from employment to excellent rates on car insurance.

A couple of weeks ago I wrote that war might be the surprise way for the US to dig itself out of a debt hole. After all, investors tend to care less about mundane things like debt service ratios when the shooting starts – and who knows what kinds of assets the winner may gain in a war?

We've all gotten them in the mail from various credit card companies - letters that read something to the effect of: "Hey, you are so special that we are going to rip you off by misleading you into getting a card with a balloon interest rate of 10-20% by redefining the word 'mile'." ... Or something like that.

At the Agora Financial Symposium in Vancouver last week, I heard my colleague and friend, Karim Rahemtulla, deliver an insightful speech just ahead of Dr. Marc Faber. I spoke after Faber, and was followed by the boss, Bill Bonner, right after my presentation. Our Sovereign Society Chairman, Jack Pugley, spoke ahead of Karim – probably the best talk on the history on money and currency debasement I've ever heard.
